How we started

Timian Started in 1994 at a time when much of the training in managing challenging behaviour was delivered through restraint and using pain based techniques. We felt that this was not appropriate for supporting people who were often the most vulnerable in society. We developed a system of techniques and defusion strategies which would reflect our core values of dignity and quality of life.

“This course should be compulsory for teachers and therapists working with children with special needs. It provides practical and strategic plans to manage behaviour and also valuable insight into reasons for behaviour. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us."

What is RRN?

The Restraint Reduction Network was born out of the BILD Physical Interventions Accreditation Scheme. The new approved training is now more in line with overall social and health care so covers the elderly, children, mental health as well as learning disabilities. The British Institute of Learning Disabilities was founded in 1971 to provide support, research and advocacy for people with learning disabilities in the United Kingdom. In the last part of the 1990’s they were tasked by the Government to develop an accreditation scheme for physical interventions after a series of scandals in managing people with learning disabilities came to light. Timian’s founder James Hourihan was part of the steering committee that helped develop the BILD Code of Practice leading to the BILD Physical Interventions Training Accreditation Scheme (BILD PITAS).

“Enlisted Timian for a customised program that could be disseminated throughout our company. The whole process was professional and engaging."
